CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

“Feel da power swallow you whole. Let go an’ lose yo’self in it.”

― Jason Medina, A Ghost In New Orleans

“Arthor! Creziel! Fetch the apprentices, start repairing the Shadow Door here. I don’t care if it’s pretty. Those holes need to be filled. All ranged fighters, I want you back in the upper tunnels right now. They may find us, but you need to make them pay for every foot. Imps stay here. Somebody get the torches back up. Everybody who’s badly injured and can still move, pull back to the throne room. Assist those who can’t. The Ergul is going to take care of you when we have time.”

People were sprinting everywhere, and I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. Ten seconds I held them closed and held my breath as I shut out all sensations, counting down slowly. Then, I slowly exhaled and opened my eyes. Turning toward Creive, I continued. “This is going too fast. It’s probably going to be an aerial battle, and it’s going to be on you. Get your people ready – and include my Imps, too. If we have the time, we will talk more.’

The huge beast didn’t comment. He nodded and jumped into the air, gliding to the other side of the cavern as he called out for the fliers to join him. I let him handle his part and walked over to look down on the Dworgen. They were still being watched over by the Crawls and Clenchers, paws gripping their weapons tightly. The sound of cries grew from the tunnels. We were running out of time.

The Dworgen leader had survived. I had not expected that and mentally recalculated exactly how tough he’d have to be to handle a huge dragon dropping on his face. He stood up as I moved closer to their group. The emotions stemming from their people were surprising, to say the least. I sensed no fear. Anxiety, sure, disappointment in spades, and a good portion of resentment. He bowed his head. “I acknowledge your strength and that of your master.” He pointed at Creive.

I ground my teeth. “He is my vassal. And you… are a problem for me right now.” I decided to play it straight. “In a couple of minutes, we’ll be attacked by Dragonlings. Did you plan for this?”

The dislike emanating from him was strong. “We tolerate the winged ones only because Selys orders us to.”

I nodded. There was no untruth coming from him. Well, that was one issue I wouldn’t have to fear. “Good. Now, I want you to swear allegiance to me right now, then I will let you leave.”

A pang of distaste came from him. “I would. We cannot, however. Our oath to Selys is… strong. If you replace her as ruler, we should be able to swear to you.”

I growled under my breath. Was it too much to ask for an easy out, for once? “If I let you go right this moment, will you come back to try to attack us?”

“No.
